[kolourpaint] [Bug 455154] Tools lack contrast with dark themes

2022-06-15 Thread Horacio Sanson
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455154

(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #1)
> What icon theme are you using, specifically? Does it reproduce if you use
> the "Breeze" or "Breeze Dark" icon theme?

I was using "Clarity" icon theme that is gray (dark) theme.
No, the issue does not happen using other icon themes.

> Does the issue reproduce when using the "Breeze Dark" color scheme?

No, with Breeze Dark the icons are white in Kolourpaint when using dark color
theme.

> Does it happen in any other KDE apps, or just Kolourpaint?

I tried other KDE apps like Krita, Kword, Kate, Kcalc but these particular
icons are not used in any of them and other icons present are in the tool bar
that has higher contrast so icons are clearly visible even if they are grey
(Clarity) on top of the dark color theme.

Now that I know that changing the icon theme solves the issue I am ok with this
work around. Thanks.

Kolour paint screenshot with dark theme

SUMMARY
***
When using a dark theme the tools on the left are very difficult to see since
they stay dark color.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set any dark color theme (e.g. Monochrome, Dracula)
2. Open kolourpaint

OBSERVED RESULT

Tools and brushes are very difficult to see and discern.

EXPECTED RESULT

Tools and brushes should change to a lighter color like the fonts to make them
more visible.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Latest KDE Neon packages.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=444253 but in this case even

Konsole vs Sakura wide font rendering.

Every modern terminal I test (sakura, st, xterm, gnome, termite) is able to
render wide fonts correctly. I really don't understand why Konsole is unable to
do the same since forever.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Configure some nice fonts with powerline glyphs (e.g. fira code)
2. Render them in konsole (see attached script).

OBSERVED RESULT

Half of each font is rendered.
Highlight with mouse to copy any of the fonts is nearly impossible.

EXPECTED RESULT

Fonts should be fully rendered as in any other terminal (see attached
screenshot).

Selecting and copying with the mouse should work as with any other text.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Linux/KDE Plasma: NEON latest updates.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

At some point in time fonts were rendered correctly when disabling
bi-directional text rendering in Konsole settings. Cannot remember which
version.

Current switch display options.

The switch display applet is amazing and works wonders on my Lenovo X1 with an
external DELL monitor and any projectors.

But it would be really nice if I could configure the options available.
Currently it has "extend left" and "extend right" but I mostly have my external
monitor or projector screen above my laptop. Also sometimes I require to set
specific resolutions on the external device.

Add capability on the display settings to add/remove these options in the
display switcher would be good start (e.g. extend top / extend bottom).

Allow creating custom configurations, e.g. "top-right UHD", "top-right FHD",
etc.

Shows icons missing on the applet.

The applet to switch displays only shows icons with the Breeze icon theme. Once
I change the icon set to something else the icons are not shown.

Looking at the icons I can see the Breeze icon theme has a "applets" folder
that contains the osd_x icons used by the switch display applet. This
folder does not exists on the other icon sets I have installed on my machine.

The applet should fallback to a default set of icons if these are not found in
the currently set icon theme.

Here is the backtrace. I must make clear that Dolphin is not freezing. I can
click the window and move it around, resize it, click the menus and all that
works fine. The file and directory icons/list in the files and the places
panels are the ones I cannot click or highlight. It is like the mouse
over/click event is not being registered in those places.

To take the backtrace:

  - Installed dolphin-dbgsym package via apt-get
  - Started dolphin with "gdb dolphin"
  - Executed start/continue inside gdb.
  - In dolphin opened a PDF file by clicking on it.
  - Verified that I can no longer click on any other file.
  - Ctrl-c inside dbg
  - Executed backtrace (shown below).

Just found an interesting behavior with this issue. Dolphin becomes
unresponsive to clicks only when it is in the external screen.

I can still drag the dolphin window between my main (laptop) screen and my
external monitor. If I drag dolphin and put it in the main laptop screen I can
click on any icons/places and everything works as normal.

Once I drag the dolphin window to the external monitor screen I can no longer
click on any icons or places.

Bug ID: 378155

   Product: dolphin
   Version: 16.12.3
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED

For some reason dolphin stops responding to clicks after opening any file.

To reproduce:

  - Important: This only happens when I have an external monitor connected to
my laptop with the laptop screen as main screen.
  - Open Dolphin
  - Click any file (e.g. docx, pdf, txt)
  - Close the app that started when clicking.
  - Try to click another file or any button in dolphin and it won't register.
  - Closing dolphin using the close button in the window title bar works.
  - Restarting dolphin fixes the issue until I open another file by clicking.
  - Happens on all views in dolphin.
  - It does not happen on my desktop that has single monitor.

There seem to be similar reports about this issue:

Interesting, if I use the correct --title parameter it does not crash. But if I
use the wrong one -title it does crash.

I will close this issue but I believe a crash due to an invalid input parameter
is a bug.

Updating QT to 5.7.1 and the latest Plasma 5.9 fixed the issue with the
notifications dialog so I am closing this.

But running kdialog still crashes with the same problem so I will open a
different issue.

Looks like Kde Neon still uses 5.7.0, what would be the easiest way to upgrade
to 5.7.1?

There must be something wrong with KDE or QT since I am seeing this issue more
often now on other apps after I updated my distro.

For example running kdialog with the command below causes the exact same crash:

  kdialog -title="Save File" --getsavefilename /tmp

Running screenfetch in the terminal also causes the same crash and closing my
laptop lid crashes plasma with the same exact message related to
QObject::disconnect() method.

I have last updated Kde Neon packages installed and have tried restarting,
removing my .kde folder, etc.

kcrash report output.

Steps to reproduce:

  - Right click in the Notifications icon in the systray.
  - Select "Configure Event Notifications and Actions..."
  - In the notifications dialog press Ok button, even without changing
anything.
  - A kcrash alert appears indicating that kcmshell5 segfaulted.
  - Happens everytime.

Notes:

  - The kcrash general tab says that I cannot report this issue (report bug
button is grayed out) because kcmshell5 does not provide a bug reporting
address.

  - When accessing the notifications settings from the kde setting application
the crash does not occur because there is no Ok button there, only Apply
button.

[konsole] [Bug 349350] Some monospaced fonts missing in the fonts menu

--- Comment #1 from Horacio Sanson <ryujin_s...@yahoo.co.uk> ---
I have this issue since KDE4 and now using KDE5 with Konsole 15.2.3 the problem
persists. The usual response is the this is a problem of QT or Fontconfig.

If I use fontconfig to list the monospaced fonts I can see that the list
returned by fontconfig is the same list show in Konsole font select dialog.
This confirms the problem indeed is fontconfig.

To see the monospaced fonts as detected by fontconfig I run this command in the
terminal:

   fc-list ":spacing=mono:scalable=true" family

More investigation indicates that the problem are the fonts themselves that are
missing the fixedPitch flag. I found a program that sets this flag on on any
ttf font but even with the flag set the font does not appear in the list:

https://git.fedorahosted.org/cgit/liberation-fonts.git/plain/scripts/setisFixedPitch-fonttools.py

Some additional discussions and resources regarding this issue:

  -
http://fontforge.10959.n7.nabble.com/Regenerated-font-does-not-recognize-as-a-Monospace-in-Windows-td11291.html

  -
https://eev.ee/blog/2015/05/20/i-stared-into-the-fontconfig-and-the-fontconfig-stared-back-at-me/

All I want is able to use the M+ monospaced font that has Japanese characters
so my Japanese emails look good in mutt+konsole but so far this has been
mission impossible for the last 5 years.

This is the font just in case: http://mplus-fonts.osdn.jp/about-en.html

This would break all terminal applications to non English speaking users. I use
mutt to read my emails that come in Spanish, English and Japanese.

There is no single font that supports all three languages so limiting the
terminal to a single font would be impractical for users like me.

The real issue here is not Konsole but fontconfig that is not configured
correctly for your case. Here is blog post explaining the issue and possible
fix:
