[kwin] [Bug 362955] (Auto)Suspending compositing sometimes results in stale non-composited picture

I have this issue, and have had it for quite some time. I can trigger it
(almost) 100% of the time by turning off compositing using any method.

I've grabbed some screenshots in case it's useful. This:
http://i.imgur.com/9NfHLAw.png is the desktop before I disable compositing and
close the window. This: http://i.imgur.com/RXXL7qp.png is immediately after I
disable compositing.

I'm using openSUSE 42.1, kernel 4.1.27, Plasma 5.5.5, and an Nvidia 970 with
their driver (367.35). I've seen the issue consistently through at least a few
versions of openSUSE, KDE 4 and 5, and three different GPUs (all Nvidia, all
proprietary driver), though. I think I've also pretty much always used two or
more monitors with that computer.

kwin_x11 --replace does fix the issue for me, for a little while. I can then
disable compositing and everything functions like it should, for a while.
Disabling and re-enabling compositing afterwards will bring the issue back, but
not consistently. The issue might resurface the first time I disable
compositing again, or it might be ten "cycles" before it happens again.

[kwin] [Bug 368076] New: Disabling compositing causes parts of the desktop to not update

2016-08-31 Thread J . Daffodil via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=368076

Bug ID: 368076
Summary: Disabling compositing causes parts of the desktop to
not update
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.5.5
  Platform: openSUSE RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: compositing
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: johndaffo...@protonmail.com

When I disable compositing, my panel and any additional widgets on my desktop
no longer update. They display what was there when compositing is first turned
off until I restart. The clock will keep whatever time it was, the taskbar
whatever windows were open, etc.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Disable compositing

Actual Results:
Panels/widgets no longer update

Expected Results:
Panels/widgets updating

I'm not entirely sure if this needs to be a separate bug from
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361692 which appears to be the same issue
but it's under plasmashell's clock, or
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362955 which says it's limited to
auto-suspending compositing, whereas I can trigger it with Alt+Shift+F12.

Possibly relevant specs:

Nvidia 970, 367.35 proprietary driver
openSUSE Leap 42.1, kernel 4.1.27
Plasma 5.5.5
Two monitors

I've seen this issue fairly consistently for a few years. The only constants
have been openSUSE, using an Nvidia GPU, using the Nvidia driver, and possibly
a multi-monitor setup. Different versions, different cards hasn't mattered.

I have this problem. When I disable compositing, my panel stops updating.

Nvidia 970, 367.35 proprietary driver
openSUSE Leap, kernel 4.1.27
Plasma 5.5.5
Two monitors

I doubt much info will be relevant, though, because I've had this issue for
years. With KDE4, with a different GPU, different kernel. The only things that
have remained constant have been openSUSE (I know I saw it with 13.1, 13.1, and
42.1 at least), a Nvidia GPU (a 460, 660 Ti, and 970) and the proprietary
Nvidia driver (all of the versions I've used, I think). I'm not sure about it
always being a multi-monitor setup. I'll do some testing on that when I'm home
and have some free time.
