For me this started to happen without restarting kmail, just switching between
folders can make columns resize weirdly.

FWIW, I had this issue after upgrading to Plasma 5.22.0 and Gear 21.04.2.
A couple of day later I upgraded to Frameworks 5.83 and the problem was solved,
so I didn't need to upgrade to Plasma 5.22.1
