So I've tested this under Windows and found the actual shortcut for Merge
Selected Layers is actually Ctrl+E, which works fine. Same for Linux. When no
layer is selected it merges the layer below.

Actually, we really need a button for Merge Selected Layers in the Layers
docker. At the current state, there is no way for people to know Krita can even
do this (I didn't know it until Scott's book,
