KDE Connect 1.10.1 android app works like a charm for me.
I use Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with Android 9, and kdeconnect
1.3.4-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build11 on a laptop

But oldest available version on F-Droid that I see is
Version 1.12 (11200) - Added on 2019-03-10
It doesn't show 1.10.1 even in a F-Droid app
I'll try to search other sources for 1.10
