            Bug ID: 440468
Summary: Lynx plugin - open a new tab with konsole/lynx (if
                    /usr/bin/lynx executable)
           Product: konqueror
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: New Plugin wishes
          Assignee: konq-b...@kde.org
          Reporter: kjf...@startmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Since Konqueror is now a usable browser, is there a way to make it lovable and
a viable alternative? Yes there is. Baby steps.

Ok, this is not exactly a minor request. But let's stop pretending Konqueror is
a general browser for everyone on every system. We have Firefox for that, so
most people don't use Konqueror. That doesn't mean konqueror cannot be cool.
How can Konqueror be cool? By embracing GNU/Linux fully and special use cases
while keeping the browser light but good at browsing the web (thanks
webengine).

Am I wrong in remembering there was a way in the past to integrate a shell
terminal in Konqueror. Maybe.. But this would basically be what this plugin
would do, but it would also automatically launch Lynx.
1. Plugin checks if /usr/bin/lynx is executable, if no; outputs "you must have
Lynx installed to use this plugin", if yes executes Lynx in a shell and puts
this in a Konqueror tab.
2. Lynx and shell creates a konqueror/config-profile and use this to allow
various setting variations while staying away from user Lynx/shell settings.
Optionally allow loading user Lynx settings.
3. Konqeuror tab always keeps Lynx shell maximized inside the tab and controls
tab geometry as it would any other tab.
4. Closing tab kills Lynx/shell. Closing Lynx kills shell and closes tab.
5. Plugin allows running multiple tab instances of Lynx/shell

I can't claim that I can say how this would optimally be done and what
complexities it would add. I said baby steps, because I hope it would not take
too much effort to be able to do something like this, and the components
already exist. At best it would just take some clever tweaks to make it happen.
At worst it would require some significant changes. I chose "plugin" because I
believe it doesn't have to be complex or a browser function.
The main point would be to launch an instance of Lynx/shell inside the
Konqueror GUI (inside a tab) and have it behave as any other tab would
(geometry etc).

I guess, to make it easy, it could be possible to just make it possible with a
plugin that launches an instance of Konsole inside a Konqueror tab, and have it
automatically launch Lynx.

The main (and really only) point of this request is to be able to launch the
Lynx browser in a Konqueror tab and have it seamlessly act as a tab. And to
implement this in the simplest and least expansive way possible.

So, what is the purpose of this? Purpose it to make Konqueror cool, and able to
do cool things. That's how I first remember Konqueror. It used to be cool and
able to do cool things, but eventually turned into a bad web browser and a file
manager that nobody uses. Konqueror can be cool by fully embracing GNU/Linux
instead of embracing the "browser software suite" concept. Konqueror can be
better than other browsers in its own way, while not necessarily competing with
them.

In regards to Lynx, this means being able to run an ultra lightweight browser
inside a lightweight browser (konq), for the purpose of use or testing or
whatever. Or to be able to run Lynx in "another way" as a main browser, while
complementing it with Konqueror browser functions in the same window (another
tab). It's a kind of Konqueror/Lynx twin browser concept and has many different
potential use cases aside from just being cool or geeky.
