I am using OpenSUSE. The problem is that when this happens it's almost
impossible to get a backtrace since the desktop becomes unusable, and using gdb
becomes very problematic when this happens.

I'm guessing that there is an out-of-bounds condition where the stack is
getting trashed:

Unfortunately, I have been unable to obtain a backtrace. It says it is
unavailable even though the debug symbols are installed. This is extremely
repeatable.
