Hmmm, it is an advanced feature I agree, but redirecting stream to HDMI always
require changing profile at least on my machine. For example on windows there
is an option to select a 'playback device' and to correct if OS fails to
redirect automatically to HDMI or if you want to change output to speakers or
headset.

How HDMI stream redirection works for you?
Is it automatically redirected when you plug in the cable?

This is not about switching device for streams, but changing profiles of
devices which is currently only possible from KCM as that is an advanced
feature that is rarely used.

You can just drag and drop applications between output devices, or use the
context menu of the device to set it as default
