Favorites are mostly user-placed, so spatial memory should help with
disambiguification. Plus it's really on app devs to make sure their app icons
are distinct anyways.

Kicker is an alternative menu designed for users who want a more
space-constrained, tightly-packed menu. It's for the kind of user who goes
"please remove these dumb space-wasting text labels everywhere, I know what
icon I am clicking", not the user who wants those labels added. It's an opt-in
design for people who know their shell well and want to use it efficiently.

If that's not the audience openSUSE is targeting they probably shouldn't
default to Kicker. Kicker used to be superior in features to Kickoff so there
were reasons to default to Kicker, but I ported Kickoff to Kicker's backend in
5.4, so they're at parity now. Of course a distro which does target that
audience would presumably do very well defaulting to Kicker.

Thanks for resolving this.

Back to Kicker: maybe each icon on the left side could get corresponding text
on the bottom. Then one could get a quicker overview of the available items;
especially when icons are similar (like for example LibreOffice Writer or Calc
which almost only differ in color at this small size).

Oh? Is Kickoff the one with the user picture on the top and the "Favourites"
tab? Then it would be an openSUSE issue.

The Plasma 5 default is Kickoff ("Application Launcher"), not Kicker.

I again watched two new users (children in 6th grade) to be confused with the
layout of the current menu. The task was to start Firefox and those two clicked
on "Recent Applications".

I wonder what would be the best way to get this fixed... is Kicker the default
menu in upstream Plasma or is it an openSUSE thing and requests should go
somewhere there?

I recently had to clarify this again to some new users ("No, if you want to
start Firefox please don't click on the text but on the icon only because these
are not related here").

I therefore set this issue to "Reopened", ok?
