Definitely not a cable problem.  The time the screen is black is always the
same (somewhere around a second or two), indicative of something crashing and
restarting.  The monitor OSD shows no indication that the hardware has lost its
connection.  Never happens in Windows.  And I can't see getting the errors I'm
getting if it was the cable.
