Can confirm that this can be mitigated/worked around by logging out and logging
back in.
(I think it does something to reinitialize the graphic drivers?)

Oh and also, when yo plug in the secondary display, are you also disabling the
laptop display such that your laptop's desktop moves over to the other screen?
Or are both screens active at the same time.
