I tested with exactly the same packages here.
Can you create a new user in your system, log in with it and try to run
kgeography within that user's session? Just to check if using the default
desktop set

I updated AppStream to 0.11.8 in openSUSE Tumbleweed (it will get to the
repositories in a couple of days or so) and I checked that that update fixes
this problem.
