After comparing 5.8.0 with the master branch in git, it seems that the problem
is caused by the line
X-KDE-ParentApp=org.kde.discover.desktop
in the file
/usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.discovernotifier/metad

I just tried it in KDE Neon developer stable and it works (for my Samsung
Galaxy Note 3 phone).
Is this helpful? If not I could try to build digikam with the latest code in
git in KDE Neon user edition

Yeap! I can confirm that compiling digikam 5.3.0 from git (as of 20161013) in
kde neon user, seems to fix the problem (see attached log).

this is not a solution, but can you try with a clean (new) profile? It seems
that it works in the live CD (unstable).
Also, just noticed that some files were not created during the diff commit
(I'll fix it soon)

I also tried with a new user profile (just to make that it isn't something
related to my profile's settings) and it still behaves the same way.
