When you open a Kate session that includes many files that are actually stored on other computers, if those computers are not available, it can take up to a quarter for Kate to be ready to use. The problem is consecutive to the way Kate loads a session. In its current version Kate loads all files before showing up a GUI to the user. Moreover files seem to be opened in sequence (rather then in parallel). It implies that the user will have to wait N times the device timeout where N is the number of files that cannot be opened due to unavailability of the remote devices.
