Sorry, from this comment, I meant to say: the resolution is NOT changed if I
manually add an entry to the applications menu that just points to the
executable AND then I launch it from the applications menu, whereas it does get
changed when I launch the application by executing the very same executable
file in a terminal.

Nevertheless, isn't it a bug that an application changes the system resolution?
It happens with all applications that I've tried, and also when the entry in
the Applications Menu consists of manually adding an entry that points to the
executable.

You may not be running the same command, check your .desktop file what
parameters it uses, make sure you run that command from the same environment.

This is not a source code, but a setup problem, so it doesn't make sense to
track it as a software issue. I'm sorry if that sounds disappointing for you,
but I'm looking at it from a developer point of view, and in that light, it's
not a defect we can fix for you.
