I believe this may have been fixed as far back as 7.2, certainly 7.3. The
extra confirmation step on face tags seems to have ushered in the fix. Thanks

So is the problem something that happens at import time? I unchecked the box
"Use file metadata (makes connection slower)" and the behavior persists. What
is the upshot of using/not using file metadata?

Not in the camera settings of the camera, but in the digiKam camera settings in
the digiKam setup. ((:-))
In the Renaming section of the import tool you will see a link stating whether
metadata is being used. The

It may also have something to do with cropping and/or rotating the image in the
Editor; I've been able to reproduce it just using those changes.
