Do they want to use the "kdialog" command line tool, or do they link to KDE libraries and use "KFileDialog" directly? Both support specifying the list of MIME types, for kdialog see bug 378295 comment #2. The recommended way is to just use the Qt file dialog, which also allows MIME filters.
