Please do let us know if the current version (5.1.3) works ok or if we still
have some digging to do on Windows.  Particularly - without ticking the "mount"
checkbox.

That's cool.thanks for the feedback, if backing up manually works, I can
deal with that.

I'll check for an update and see if it Corrects the problem but to answer
your question, I'm just saving to a local drive - either the same
filesystem or another physical drive in the same chassis.

First, 5.0.6 is really old.  Please try a more recent version - 5.1.3 is
current.
For your problem, what happens if you do not tick the box to mount the backup 
directory?  Where are you trying to back up the file?  To a local directory or
a network share?
For your last question, yes, simply making a copy of the .kmy file is all a
backup does, so that is sufficient - but you should use some naming convention
so each backup does not simply overwrite the previous one.
