Could you check if you accidentally activated "Nearest Neighbour" Filter in the
Transform Tool's options. The screenshot looks like you did. Select "Bicubic"
instead.

I just have a seperate layer for the object. It doesn't matter if it's
something I've drawn or a image I pasted in.
It happens both when just clicking the object with the transform tool to
select it or selecting it in a different way.

Especially when rotating something that has a straight line it's very
noticably creating sharp staircasing that doesn't have anti aliasing (see
attached image)

I cannot reproduce this. I created an image; on the top layer I painted a blob,
then selected the transform tool and rotated the blob. 

How do you select the drawn object exactly? And what does your layer structure
look like?
