Okay, it might be a kwin crash. Can you check whether kwin crashes? It's worth
checking coredumps

  coredumpctl list kwin_wayland
  coredumpctl gdb

or you could ssh to your computer and attach a debugger to kwin-wayland process

The wayland connection may break also due to a protocol error. It will be
helpful to have some wayland debug output when dolphin or plasmashell crashes.
Can you run dolphin or plasmashell with WAYLAND_DEBUG=1 and post its output
after it crashes?

It's also quite possible that the issue will be fixed in 5.22.

[kwin] [Bug 436022] kwin_wayland crashes when mounting an external USD harddrive

2021-04-23 Thread Nate Graham
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=436022

Nate Graham changed:

   What|Removed |Added

   Assignee|[email protected] |[email protected]
Summary|wayland dolphin crashes |kwin_wayland crashes when
   |when mounting an external |mounting an external USD
   |USD harddrive |harddrive
 Resolution|--- |BACKTRACE
Version|unspecified |5.21.4
 Status|REPORTED|NEEDSINFO
Product|dolphin |kwin
  Component|general |wayland-generic

Now we can see the issue:

#7  QMessageLogger::fatal (this=this@entry=0x7fff8e1bbd80,
msg=msg@entry=0x7fce18c010b8 "The Wayland connection broke. Did the Wayland
compositor die?") at global/qlogging.cpp:893

This means that kwin_wayland crashed. When it does so, it crashes all apps. So
the fact that Dolphin crashed it not that interesting; we need to know why KWin
crashed!

Can you please find and attach a suitable kwin_wayland backtrace? You may be
able to retrieve it with `coredumpctl`. See
https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports#Retrieving_a_backtrace_using_coredumpctl
