[plasmashell] [Bug 467405] Desktop Icons keep moving around after suspends and reboots

Time seems to be the only consistent factor. If enough time has passed, they
will rearrange.

That time can be passed while the computer is suspended, but doesn't have to
be. At first I thought it was related only to suspends and reboots, but since
then it has happened without that several times.

Pretty sure its happened even before the screen sleeps.

Its like the custom order is only being saved to a volatile cache file and not
the disk I guess.

So now you're seeing that after the screen or computer (which one?) goes to
sleep your icons are re-arranged to be in alphabetical order?

Unfortunately those are the only reproducible steps I have

Put icons in custom arrangement, with gaps between, wait like, 20 minutes, or
sleep for 20 minutes, then come back to them having magically rearranged.

I don't do anything else.

Hopefully when I get a more complete list of packages installed you can
reproduce? Maybe?

Is there a relevant console log I should have open and post when I get a
chance?

Sorry, I wasn't clear

I mean, I arrange them in a custom pattern spread out around the screen, then,
they used to rearrange themselves somewhat randomly (but somehow almost
following my custom order, as if they were on physical shelves that got bumped
violently) now they rearrange themselves into alphabetical order.

My custom arrangement is, 1 block of icons in a row at the top left, one row at
the top right, two rows on top of each other in the bottom left, and two rows
in the middle left.

So you arranged your icons in alphabetically sorted columns (left or right
aligned?) and then... what happened? How did they move?

It would be really helpful if you can come up with a reproducible set of steps.
Otherwise I doubt we'll be able to fix it. :/ Totally random bugs are generally
almost impossible to fix.

Yes.

I changed something such that they always arrange into alphabetically sorted
columns now (except for one time when I caught them following the same
randomized noise pattern as before, then changed to alphabetically sorted
later, again without me touching them in between)

Packages I've installed that could potentially affect things like that (I
think, based on my limited knowledge):

Steam, wine, KVM virt manager and related dependencies (though I think I
installed that after this started happening), elisa (maybe? I'm stretching
there)

Away from my desktop for this week, but I'll add more to that list when I get
back if I forgot any major ones

This is a relatively new install too. This year, around 1st week of Jan, so
very few orphaned or outdated packages. Very few programs other than the ones I
consider part of the basics. Like, Maybe 4 things installed from aur - through
yum, 1 app image, and nothing from snap or flatpack

So you're saying that the icons on your desktop literally re-arranged
themselves while nothing else was happening? That would be extremely odd.

Are you using any 3rd-party software that could help to explain this behavior?
For example anything that manipulates or in any way affects the desktop,
wallpaper, resolution, or panels.

Log out. Then in the login screen, click the session chooser in the bottom left
corner. Select "Plasma (Wayland)" and then log in.

using the command does nothing to fix it once it borks

also, this time, it managed to screw itself up without even suspending. I just
left my computer for a few minutes and off it goes.

1. Only one physical screen. HDMI, through dedicated GPU
2. X11 weirdly. I thought I installed wayland during initial setup, but x11 is
what's running in task manager
I'll check once I figure out how to switch to wayland
3. Haven't slept the system since I last sorted it out again, but it doesn't
break anything when I do it while it's sorted the way I want it.
I'll get back to you on that later

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467405

I use the desktop heavily, and it has been unusable since I updated end of
February. I have no idea why it wasn't affecting me until then.

There seems to be a minor pattern in how the icons end up, sometimes, like
there's something attempting to tie them down that just stretches, but there's
a lot of noise affecting whatever pattern it is

I never change screen resolution

changing alignment does always clearly change how the icons are aligned in a
somewhat predictable way, like, I can see the icons that used to be in the top
left changing to bottom left or top right when I change either alignment top to
bottom or left to right respectively, but there is always some randomness
applied to where they end up

I followed a random reddit thread and deleted /home/cache/icon-cache.kcache and
rebooted.
This worked for one restart, but not afterwards.

I switched a bunch of the alignment settings back and forth before I deleted
the file the first time, and now it's all lumped together on the left side of
the screen. Seems to be ordered alphabetically now

Lastly, waking from suspend doesn't always cause them to move. It seems to be
correlated to the amount of time it has been suspended (longer more likely)
