Fwd: Top 15 Mailinglists with messages in moderation

2020-10-02 Thread Ben Cooksley
Good morning community,

Each month an automated process checks the length of the moderation queue
on all KDE.org mailing lists.
This is part of ensuring that lists are actively moderated and not left too
long.

I have now reviewed the moderation queues of all of the below (English)
lists, and as part of this sadly released legitimate messages that had been
held in some cases since February this year.

Can we please look into the moderation situation of the below lists,
including whether that list is still in active use (and if not whether it
should be folded into another list, or closed entirely)?

Thanks,
Ben

I usually use moderation inactivity as one of the measures of "is this
list abandoned and no longer in use" so that isn't ideal...

With regards to marble-commits, please note that it no longer gets
email from Git and only gets sporadic mail from translations (which
may disappear at some point) so it is essentially a dead list at this
point.

In terms of marble-devel, the activity on it seems to be very low - is
there any reason why it isn't part of the main kde-edu list?

Hi Ben,

I usually just keep the spam e-mails just piling up to a certain point in the
moderation queue.
Sorry if that isn't the intended way.

As to the mailing lists: We certainly still need marble-de...@kde.org for
further Marble development.
marble-bugs and marble-commits would also be appreciated but are certainly less
important.

Would there be any issues with keeping them?

Best regards

Hi all,

Below is a list of all the mailing lists which we host that have not
been moderated recently, and as such have quite a few messages in
moderation. I have now performed moderation on those queues, and with
few exceptions virtually all of the messages were spam.

For many of the lists, a review of their archives indicates that

I'd therefore like to propose that we close the following lists:

Hi all,

Please see the below lists of mailing lists which have a larger number
of messages in moderation.

If these lists are still active, we need to look into ensuring they
have an active moderator. For those lists which are no longer in use,
we should look at closing them (if necessary, aliasing them to another
list if there is sufficient crossover).

Cheers,
Ben

Krita has a very large user community, who are principally interested
in just releases of Krita, hence the separation.
It's announcement list also has the largest number of subscribers of
any list we host, with nearly triple the number of subscribers of the
next largest list.

Why not just use kde-apps-announce? Having a separate mailing list for each
application just means people won't bother subscribing or moderating.

@boud - Yes, that is the mailing list for Krita release notifications. The
emails say not to directly reply to it, but some people still do. Every
once in a while there is something important. With so many people on that
mailing list, it is usually spam email responses.

The mod queue emails can pretty easily be skipped from inbox to a
folder, and then autodeleted in a day or so. IF you run listadmin
daily anyway.

I never look at them, since I run listadmin at least daily.

Really, you do not have to look at them. If there is a terrible spam
attack, your hand might get tired hitting return 100 times in
listadmin, but otherwise, it takes a minute or two per day, depending
on how many lists you administer.

I just ran a listadmin session, doing date -u before and after, for 85
lists on four servers (Linuxchix.org, Rootsweb.com, Ubunbu.com and
KDE.org). it took 02:03 for an uncomplicated run. It will take longer
if there is lots to deal with, or one of the servers is slow.

And if there are multiple people taking out the spam, it takes less
time per run.

Our filters assign three designations to emails that come in, based on
the score generated by SpamAssassin:

1) Ham
2) Potential Spam
3) Definite Spam

Anything which gets labelled as Definite Spam is rejected at SMTP
time, for all addresses. Everything else is accepted for delivery.
We get enough complaints from people as it is about the filter being
"too aggressive" so I don't think these thresholds should be adjusted.

Once an email is delivered to Mailman, a handler notes that the email
is Potential Spam and forcibly holds it for moderator attention.
This is to prevent sender address spoofing, which was used a while
back to hammer our lists with crap.
The same handler also auto accepts emails from Reviewboard, Bugzilla
and Jenkins so moderators don't have to.

Ham emails are allowed through to normal Mailman processing, and are
held/rejected/accepted/etc accordingly.
Messages should never be rejected using Mailman, as this results in
backscatter - something which can result in you being blacklisted.

Therefore the behaviour of our systems in this regard is entirely
correct and doing it's best to:

a) Minimize the spam which reaches our mailing lists
b) Maximise our ability to deliver email to our subscribers
c) Minimize loss of legitimate email sent to our lists
d) Keep the work a moderator needs to do to a minimum.

If we were to eliminate potential spam messages as you describe above,
there would be a definite violation of c) here, as false positives do
occur - it's a fact of life when your filter processes 10,000+ emails
a day. This is especially the case for non-English emails - a
behaviour that would disproportionately impact on various translation,
user assistance and region specific discussion lists. This is not an
acceptable change from my point of view.

That's the list that receives automatic messages for new bugs, right?
I'm wondering whether it couldn't be moderated automatically. I mean
there's only a single legit sender: bugs.kde.org. Messages from any
other sender could automatically be discarded. Just wondering...

Well, I do this automated for the global kde-commits for more than two years
and the KMyMoney list since many years now. The number of false positives
(those marked as spam and discarded automatically but were legitimate mails)
during this time is in the single digit numbers.

In case someone is interested, I can add the resp. list to my job (which also
processes a bunch of non KDE mailing lists but all mailman driven). Just let
me know.

this anyway on several lists. I doubt there is a way to drop spam

The problem is not moderating the list. The problem is that I get a
stupid useless mail every day I have to look at about pending
moderations and a stupid mail I have to human look at when a spam mail
gets in.

Note here: I get too many mails overall and the moderation queue mails
are annoying as it's in 99.9 % useless junk which I have to manually
look at.

Thanks for offering to help moderating the list, but that doesn't get my
inbox cleaner. And that's what I care about. I don't care about how many
spam mails are in the moderation queue, I care about the useless mail I
get which I have to look at.

Given that I think a mail which is marked by spamassassin as spam and
shown as spam in the moderation queue, should not be going into the
moderation queue in the first place. If someone sends a mail to the kwin
list which looks like spam to spamassassin it won't be something useful
from development perspective.

I can take any of the lists left over. I just add them to my cli
listadmin queue and delete, delete, delete the spam. A few more lists
adds only minutes to the daily job.

@Board: Please moderate your queue more regularly. Inspection of your
queue reveals a number of very old messages in there which should be
 dealt with.

 Thanks,

This was mostly spam. I don't bother deleting every spam message separately,
as that's a waste of time. For a list with relatively low traffic (such as
this), it's not an uncommon number. I've modded everything now, anyway.
