Telemetry in Plasma and Discover

2022-07-11 Thread Nate Graham

Hello all,

It's come to my attention that Plasma and Discover implemented support
for opt-in-telemetry without complying with the requirements listed at
https://community.kde.org/Policies/Telemetry_Policy#Compliance. The
Request for review was done solely in a merge request, not also on these
mailing lists.

I am retroactively emailing the kde-core-devel and kde-community mailing
lists to request review of the telemetry support in these KDE products
so that we can be in compliance with our own policies, should the review
be positive and use of opt-in telemetry continues.

I will work on adding REUSE instructions as well!

Thanks,
Felipe.

The kdiff3 1.10 branch has been created and is now on string/feature freeze.

Interestingly, the project Licentia itself uses the REUSE method, with named
license files in the LICENSE/ directory.

It seems to me that both LICENSE.txt and REUSE are valid methods, so
Licentia’s instructions should support both.

Personally, I prefer REUSE. :)

That ship has long sailed.
At least for frameworks and most of plasma has been converted.

Please note that Gitlab and other places still do rely on LICENSE (or
COPYING) files being present (and I guarantee there is distribution tooling
out there that does the same too) so I wouldn't be too quick to shoot down
LICENSE files in the root of repositories.

I am not entirely happy about the Instruction to use a license being 'put a
LICENSE file in the root directory' when it's a pattern we are going away from
and towards reuse compliance.
Maybe display the SPDX tag instead?
