Thanks for the clue.
Being able to filter on the categories placed me on the wrong path to look.
Indeed I had switched off nepomuk (desktop seach) and switching it back on gave
me back the categories.

I already mentioned I initially assigned to gentoo, and that it does compile
with some compilers.
