Gentoo folks have suggested workaround that solves the problem:
downgrading openssl to dev-libs/openssl-1.0.1c (from 1.0.1d) is a wroking
workaround.

In fact, as other have pointed out, the issue seems to lie with an openssl
upgrade.
I was using openssl-1.0.1c with kmail 4.9, and simultaneously upgraded to
kmail4.10 and openssl-1.0.1d.
