opensuse LEAP 42.1
I've created a new user (clean config) and see same behavior.
kmail crashes also if I edit "identities" (choosing folders for sent emails,
etc.)

nope it's not related to switch to QtWebEngine.
But I need to investigate when I will able to create an encrypted invitation

I have the same behavior on version 5.3.0. If the meeting invitation has been
encrypted, KMail simply doesn't react, but with a slightly different error in
the log:

log_kmail: Can't handle URL: QUrl("x-kmail:/bodypart/7/2/accept")

That is probably related to the switch to QtWebEngine, but it looks like it
hits the same problem.

For me the bug appeared with kde-apps 16.08.0. It's thus a regression from
16.04.3.

Fixing this bug was the intention behind this patch:

https://commits.kde.org/kmail/1444e5f9a259079e857b13a3a54d01c23ab4114e

Alas, I'm not sure if this was really the cause. Please check if this still
happens in 16.08.1 or later. If it does, please append the new backtrace.

My plugin isn't linked against WebEngine either, as your (really cool) script
revealed. But then I don't understand how loading krunner_pimcontacts.so can
possibly lead to QtWebEngine::initialize(). This is triggered deep
withinQPluginLoader::instance() after all. Might this be an upstream bug?
