Good news: I did manage to reproduce the problem.
01: start kmail on notebook
02: ssh into notebook from pc
03: run killall kmail in ssh session, killing ssh

I'm not sure to which extent my bug (#199266) is a dupe, but the described

I was able to fix it by killing all processes found by
ps auxww | grep akona| awk '{ print $2 }' | xargs kill ; killall -9
