I tried to install bcmwl-kernel 6.30.223, disabled apport, disabled
Intel SpeedStep, used acpi=off noapic kernel args, to no avail.
Upgraded kernel to version 3.10.0.6 (taken from

release. I need to stick to the LTS release (i.e. 12.04). However, I
fixed this issue by install v3.5-xx-quantal kernel as mentioned above.

problem (meaning, I know how to!). But when I had to update the BIOS of
this mainboard last time, I ended up with a brick. And then it was a costly

the USB HDD is properly attached automatically to a USB2 controller

but I agree that my BIOS is quite out of date. So, I'll probably upgrade
tomorrow. (Have to go to work now).
That said, I'm skeptical upgrading the BIOS would matter because Linux
3.2.0-49 works fine and 3.2.0-51 doesn't.
After upgrading to 3.11 on saucy today the problem seems to be fixed.
