I have had problems more frequently trying to boot after installing kernel
3.11, which started ok the first time but afterwards I couldnt boot any of the
availabe kernels.

That is correct. However, the firmware does not work properly then (log

Tested 13.10 beta 1 and this issue still happens quite frequently (325.15
driver), going to try Debian as suggested by Joris V.
I have used Ubuntu primarily since 8.04 but this is getting to much of a burden
and it doesn't seemed to be fixed upstream..

This is on an i7 4770, if that matters.
No, that's something completely new. Please open a new bug report and
attach your dmesg, Xorg.0.log and /sys/drm/card0/error from after one of
the hangs.

Ubuntu fails to properly boot on Macbook Air
Launching pavucontrol may still freeze the system, hence
snd_hda_codec_hdmi has to be blacklisted (losing its required
functionality), also under kernel 3.8.0-30 and even after a BIOS update
