So, there was a massive config shuffle between -19 and -20, but this is
a complete diff of the amd64-generic kernel's configs between those
versions, and nothing obvious jumps out at me.

I got it working, here's what I did:
1. Booted the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS live USB by setting the nomodeset option
from the launch menu: Place the cursor over the try ubuntu option,
press the e key, add nomodeset after quite splash, and press F10
to boot.

Honestly, this goes towards nonsense. The bug appears in *all* my
computers whether I use 32bit or 64bit Ubuntu 14.04 and whether i use a
Dell Latitude, Dell Inspiron or a HP-computer. This is obviously a very

The video looks like it's shifted by 1byte or so. Red looks green, blue
looks violet, green looks dark violet. (almost everything looks between
green and violet as in the attached snapshot.
WORKAROUND: Change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet
