For what it's worth, I had this problem upon letting Software Updater
upgrade my system to 3.13.0-45.
I rebooted into 3.13.0-44 and I noticed the
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-45-generic file was about half the size of
previous versions (at about 17MB) so I tried using Synaptic Package
Manager to

with 14.04. It is a hard freeze and I'm forzed to shut down the computer
through the power button. I tried if a fresh system would make it work,
so I booted a live DVD and reproduced
