a while back after an upgrade I lost synaptic's history. I can't
remember when it happened and can't test by downgrading,

I've also been seeing this bug in kubuntu for about the last 6 months. The wifi
actually works when I come directly out of sleep mode but if the computer
screen is allowed to lock then afterwards the wifi is broken and journalctl
shows errors of the kind

Team Fortress 2, as many Steam games do, do not use Ubuntu native
libraries. Instead Steam provides its own ones, which usually are older
and do not support the latest Radeon graphics.

1. I read that some people reported the power interfering with the card (try
booting from battery or AC)
2. I read some people saying that putting the computer to sleep and restoring
makes Atheros work (weird)
3. Some people reported problems with Atheros card

not sure why your firmware is crashing... You seem to have the exact
same laptop as me (Lenovo 80K90001US, or at least everything seems to
match so far).
You could try editing htc.c (drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k) and
commenting out that error to see if it helps (or fails later) but this

On Elementary OS Freya, installing the ath10k package from post #258 I think,
and upgrading the kernel to linux-generic-lts-vivid (3.19) fixed it :)
