As I suspected the cause was in hardware, and specifically due to the
motherboard using Master Write 0-wait state access, which meant the
device had not completed mapping its registers into the PCI Config
address space when the kernel probed for the Vendor ID.
User applied my recommended BIOS conf

I found a solution!
It seems to have been as simple as delete purge xserver-xorg and then reinstall
xserver-xorg
This fixed the issue for me.
However, in the meantime I also manually updated my linux headers to the latest
version (for wiley) because they would not update correctly by just doing

The crash is also triggered using a Live CD/USB, you just need to wait
enough while keeping /var/log/syslog open.
I think the bug is triggered sometimes by applications using 3D. In my
case, virtualbox is the nr 1 application trigging the crash (not
everytime, but kind of often).

cardreader cannot read the Kingston 64GB SDXC anymore. Same error

To factor this out of the issue, can you temporarily disable thermald
using:
sudo systemctl disable thermald
I doubt this is the root cause, but at least it factors out the crash

After suspend/res
After I upgraded my packages today, found out that cheese is working now with
no problem, but the gnome-sushi still has problem.
