Ok, this time, I have the live DVD booted with gfxpayload=text, "quiet splash" not specified, and "nomodeset" *not* specified. Once the optical drive stopped making noise, I pressed Ctrl-ALt-F1 and my monitor immediately got a signal. I then pressed Ctrl-Alt-F7 and got to the desktop. I'll
