Tested latest v4.9 kernel, as suggested by Joseph Salisbury. The bug remains
exactly the same:
Backlight control does not work and there are no entries in /sys/class/backlight
Apart from that, this kernel makes the PC run slow (at least, a big
latency is observed on the screen when typing on

system freeze
After using it for a while I notices another bug.
Connecting to dock causes screen to split and monitor is started for a few
seconds, but then turn off and only the laptop display is shown, but main
desktop is on the other display.

realistic) scenario:
- install ubuntu 16.04
- configure networking with a bridge interface but a port member that doesn't

To be more precise: I'm currently running Kubuntu 16.10 with kernel 4.8 and
still this adapter is not working right.
There obviously is a fix available (see my OP) it just needs some dev to
include it into the kernel.
