I've since tested 17.04 all the way back to 4.2.8 and it still fails.
I've also tested 15.10 up to 4.3.6 and it works correctly. So something

acceleration when available" I've not had it hang again. This is going

Sorry, forgot to mention the most important bit of information: that did not
solve the problem.
Nor did adding "acpi=biosirq" or "i8042.reset" to the kernel line (solutions
reported for other computers with similar problems).
Secure boot was disabled throughout. (I have no idea why legacy boot
I updated to kernel 4.12 and the kernel recover usb failures on boot
( the clue was that the usb live cd booted , recovering usb failures, with
ubuntu 17.04 kernel 4.10 )
+ i booted on macos , and updated the system from the default macos
updater : some stuff on the "bios" should have been
This sounds like a problem with SecureBoot.
Did you disable UEFI SecureBoot?
How about the touchpad? Is it working with your kernel?

I managed to boot the kernel I had compiled with the above patch (but
not based on 4.12.1 but on 4.8.0). I needed to change to legacy boot
mode in BIOS to get it to boot.
