Using the patch that Jay mentioned above, as well as following his direction in getting the kernel compiled, after 5 reboots this appears to resolve the issue. from watching this reboot many times both with the stock kernel and the upstream intel driver, i can see that this acts more like the

Dmesg doesn't show, and modinfo doesn't give a version either. I did run the apport command, but with the newer driver installed. dmesg doesn't show driver version either. I can say that in the focal latest kernel it is version 0.8.7-k, for what that's worth.. modinfo ice from a different
