While not officially supporting Dell Studio laptops in the past, previous versions of Ubuntu (= 11.10) and previous kernels had support for i8k on my device. Manually inserting gives the message No such device. Forcing it causes a kernel panic. -- You received this bug notification because you

@Joseph: Sorry for the late response. I've been busy. I downloaded and installed that kernel that you linked. It unfortunately did not resolve my problem. I recieved the same error messages as before (no /proc/i8k). Was Dell Laptop support enabled when you compiled? -- You received this bug

2014-06-17 Thread Liam P. White
Public bug reported: On previous versions of Ubuntu, I could use i8kfan to control the fans on my laptop. I am usually up to compiling lp:inkscape , and when my fan speed decreases while compiling, that is a problem. A big problem, in fact. Now, on 14.04 with kernel 3.13.0-29-generic, I can no

Christopher, I performed these steps, in the order that they were listed: 1. Uninstall i8kutils 2. Download and install the upstream Utopic kernel 3. Reboot At this point, I heard the fan turn on high, and assumed that this was related to the uninstallation of i8kutils. Surely enough,

i8kutils works with the upstream kernel. i8kfan runs the fan for about 4 seconds, then immediately drops it back down to 0. However, this is a good improvement over the intermittent segfaulting previously. ** Tags removed: kernel-unable-to-test-upstream ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream --

Unfortunately, my laptop cannot at all control its fan with the upstream kernel. It starts, and then intermittently stops, even when the CPU is over the 80*C threshold. This is not acceptable. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed
