Actually I don't think the issue is related to the BIOS of my laptop but rather
to the firmware of my
"HP 2013 UltraSlim-Dockingstation". Therefore I tried the following firmware
upgrade:

Thx for the support. Ufortunately the bug is only fixed partially:
Laptop: Display Port: WORKS: If I connect the external monitor to the
Display Port of the Laptop (HP EliteBook 840 G1) it works!

The same happened to me. I did the upgrade 15.10->16.04 while my laptop was
docked into the "HP 2013 UltraSlim-Dockingstation" and at some point during the
upgrade my screen went black and so I decided to reboot. And from this point on
I could not get my 16.04 system working anymore so I
I've the same issue on my "HP EliteBook 840 G1" when I dock my laptop to
my "HP 2013 UltraSlim-Dockingstation" I get the following error in
"/var/log/syslog":

I have the same issue.
My configuration:
- Ubuntu 14.04, with all updates (Ubuntu 3.13.0-37.64-generic 3.13.11.7)
- EliteBook 840 G1 connected to a HP ultraslim docking station 2013.
- 1 Acer B273HU connected to the DP of the docking
FGLRX: linux-amd-catalyst-14.6-beta-v1.0-jul11.zip: fglrx-14.20
In addition to the internal DP the VGA Port of Docking Station works as well
fine (so finally only the 2 DPs of the Docking Station don't work).
Connecting my monitor the the VGA Port of the Docking Station is for me an
acceptable work-around until AMD (or HP) have fixed this issue.
