or without the dock, and I wasn't even reaching grub. That's the big difference
here. If you lose the video after grub, than your problem is elsewhere, and my
suggestion is to boot without "quiet splash" on

After the freeze i can restart my display manager (lightdm) and resume my work
for some time.
Quite often, this happens when I wake up my screen after a lock or after
un-/re-plugging my external display.
