This was fixed for me. It was a problem with the bios. I had to change
the SATA setting to ACHI, turn off secure boot, and then reboot to bios
and then I could change it from UEFI to Legacy, and then I was able to
install.

I've read through the instructions, but I don't really understand them.
Am I basically just cloning the kernel, and then going back one commit
at a time, installing the kernel, and then seeing if the trackpad works?

I'm a humble web developer, but I can certainly try that. Unfortunately,
I'm working on a Chromebook with 16GB of hard drive space and could not
fit the linux git repository on my SSD, but I have a new one in the
mail, and I will try when that comes.
