I'm experiencing the same behavior as above. I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and the 3.13 mainline kernel. I was able to find a workaround that let me control the backlight brightness through the applet. Create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with the following: Section "Device" Identifier
