Hello - sorry for the delay. I wanted to reinstall after 14.04 was out.
After installing a fresh 14.04 and using the NVIDIA binary driver (ver
331.38 in this instance) the backlight controls work properly with no
extra configuration required. They did not however work using the
Nouveau display

Backlight control does not work with Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit. Hot keys Fn 6
and Fn 7 are active but have no effect on the brightness of the LCD.
