same here Ubuntu 14.0.4.3 kernel 3.19.0-47-generic with HTC M8 MTP enabled
first i installed mtpfs package as advised on Ubuntu forms and worked fin with
banshee but the kernel update was installed and after restart same problem again
i used apt-get purge mtpfs and same problem

Using Ubuntu 14.04, I used:
sudo sed -i 's/#user_allow_other/user_allow_other/g' /etc/fuse.conf
and this solved my problem.

I had similar issue with Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2014 SM P605 and running
Linux Mint 16.
The connection worked fine with Caja until I rooted the tablet, then I
got the No such interface 'org.gtk.vfs.Mount' on object at path
/org/gtk/vfs/mount/1 message.

Got error message says Unable to mount Nexus 4 UNable to open MTP
device [USB:003, 010].
And the error message just keeps pop up.
I am sure it is not due to hardware issue, b/c I also have windows
installed on this desktop. My nexus 4

It turns out the phone didn't have MTP enabled. To turn it on:
Settings - Storage - options -USB computer connection - Media device
(MTP)
Now it automounts nicely.

I am having the same problem in three different system. One laptop and
two desktops. It seems unlikely to me that it can be a hardware problem.
Maybe a problem with the driver.
