A weird thing happened today on my last reboot of the PC. I installed
unetbootin and gparted through apt-get and some updates may have gotten
installed as well at the same time prior to the reboot. When the desktop
was ready I went to the sound settings and suddenly the card was
listed. aplay now

I was able to boot into the 3.17 mainline kernel but there is still no
soundcard detected.
aplay -l shows no cards.
