I updated my Hardware Enablement Stack using the CLI instructions
provided in the following link and have run for an hour and half with a
couple brief freezes but overall working:

this is not a BIOS issue and Canonical needs to back out the change(s)

I checked the page you linked to. The BIOS update is a Windows
executable. I don't have Windows on this system and haven't since the
day it arrived. I went ahead and downloaded sp70266.exe and tried
running it under wine and it of course, failed.

minutes then networking completely stopped.
