So it may be another bug...
It is considered another bug when one uses the nvidia proprietary driver, and
is not the scope of this report. You are welcome to file a new report

Thank you for the suggestion.
I have now updated the BIOS to the latest version 205.
Ubuntu no longer boots. It gets stuck on the ubuntu boot screen. With
the ubuntu logo and the small dots below it.
I am still able to boot Mint and the problem is not fixed in Mint.
Let me know if I can do
ishbalai, as per
http://www.asus.com/supportonly/N501JW/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to
your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (205). If you
update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate

If it doesn't, could you please both specify

ishbalai, just to clarify your results in

, you installed Ubuntu, enabled the discrete card, did not install a
nvidia proprietary driver (i.e. used nouveau), and then tested kernel
4.1-rc5?

I tried all the workarounds listed an here are my results:
Booting with defaults:
- Brightness hotkeys does not work.
- Brightness slider in Power Management works.

Booting with: acpi_backlight=vendor
- Brightness hotkeys does not work.
- Brightness slider in Power Management does not
That's right. I used all the defaults while testing the 4.1-rc5
kernel. Without Nvidia proprietary driver.

Thanks for the reply. I have unfortunately gotten rid of Ubuntu to try
Linux Mint that has the same problem.
Mint being based on Ubuntu, would the logs from Mint be any helpful?
Otherwise I'm afraid I cannot supply any logs.
