I have done a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install and then I have installaed the mainline kernel suggested, i.e. 4.6.0-040600rc6-generic. I have tested all day long the machine and it seems there is no random monitor shut-down anymore, nor "[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR*" in the

I'll do the test you asked, thanks for the suggestion. I've installed Ubuntu 15.04 (at the moment running kernel 4.2.0-35-generic) and this bug was NOT present; there seems there is some kind of regression. Will go on with investigation with mainline kernel and update. Thanks for your help. --
