According to this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=382812 the issue is not plasma-workspace, nor sddm, nor nvidia, but xorg and according to it the bug has been fixed in xorg. Closing now, if the bug still persists please reopen with details on a supported release. ** No longer affects:

I can confirm that this is happening only in combination with Display Link drivers. Yesterday everything was working fine on Ubuntu 18.04 with Nvidia drivers, but today I've installed DisplayLink 5.1 so that I can use 2 external monitors at work and then square appeared. -- You received this
