Oh, damn, forgot that I put this up here. It was the same after switching to 18.04, but then I fixed it. Turns out that problems loading the graphics driver during boot are so common, that there's a grub option that disables it: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset" This needs to be set and Grub
